Mention of massage comes from historic
Egypt, Greece, China, India and Oceania. Each culture developed their own
approach and techniques. The base for the modern massage was established
by Peer Ling in Stockholm, Sweden (therefore "Swedish massage") as part
of a gymnastic school program. Massage was introduced to North America
in the early 20th century but very soon many massage therapists started
specializing in their own fields of expertise. In Ontario, Registered Massage
Therapists are regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act (the
same legislation covering Physicians, Dentists, Physiotherapists etc.).
Training standards are among the highest in North America. Upon graduating
from a 2,200 hour course at a government approved massage therapy school, candidates must then
